Victoria Reese Speaks About Journey to Founding Victor Group
Victoria Reese (B.A. ’09) speaks with Howard University about her journey to founding Victor Group, a multi-service branding agency that makes people and their brands fascinating. The company has championed major commercial and endorsement deals across the spectrum for high-profile clients and budding entrepreneurs.
HU: What brought you to Howard University?
Reese: As a kid, I always wanted to be a lawyer. My mother told me [about] how one of our cousins attended Howard for law school, and that it was the best school to attend if I wanted to be a successful lawyer. I always had Howard on my mind since about the age of 5. Over the years, that was my plan and everyone knew the script “I’m going to Howard!”
HU: In which area did you earn your degree?
Reese: Legal Communication
HU: Describe your career path. What opportunities and decisions led to your current position?
Reese: I’ve been fortunate to have been employed at top agencies such as Universal McCann, William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, LLC, Walton Isaacson and MediaVest, garnering experience from industry giants in both New York City and Los Angeles. These jobs molded and shaped the creative strategist that I am today. Few have the attention to detail and the eye for opportunity that I’ve been able to garner through these companies. They taught me the ropes.
HU: What personal and professional satisfactions do you get as the founder of Victor Group?
Reese: I actually find satisfaction in being able to mix both my personal and professional interests through Victor Group. That’s rare. By being the founder [of] Victor Group, I get to see what it means to plant a seed and truly watch it grow.
HU: What are you passionate about in your work?
Reese: I’m passionate about taking one’s vision and bringing it to life. I get hand selected by people who trust me to cultivate their ideas and turn them into reality.
HU: What does the future hold for Victor Group?
Reese: I genuinely believe that the sky's the limit for Victor Group. I wake up each morning for Victor Group and every night, I go to sleep excited about what it will bring the next day. I give it my all, and in return it gives me purpose.
HU: How has your HU School of Communications experience helped shape your success?
Reese: Being a graduate of the School of Communications gave me the voice I needed to be able to start a business. Using this voice, I plan to be an influence and make an impact. Not only am I the brains behind [Victor Group], but I am [also] the face in the forefront of it.
HU: In what ways are you making a positive impact in the world?
Reese: I represent women who want to make a difference in the business world, but don’t think they quite have what it takes. I’m just like every little girl who has to pave [her] own way and create [her] own reality. I’m showing how to persevere, despite adversities. I’m a mascot for resilience.
HU: What is the most incredible thing that has happened to you since graduating?
Reese: I got laid off from my job a few years ago, and I knew that I was disposable. It sparked a fire in me that inspired me to start my own business and do things my way. And now we have Victor Group.
HU: What was your favorite HU moment?
Reese: If you’re a Bison, that’s an extremely hard question to answer. There are so many amazing, monumental and memorable moments etched into [my] heart. It’s a toss between [the] first day I got to Howard to move in—I knew it was the best decision I’d made at that point in my life—and the day I crossed ALPHA Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I knew I had been molded by the finest women to ever do it.
HU: How do you support Howard University as an alumna?
Reese: I am [a] walking billboard for what Howard excellence is and the type of successful Black people it produces. I brag about Howard everyday and support fellow Bison whenever I can.
HU: Please share some advice with Bison students and alumni interested in your career field or pursuing a dream job.
Reese: “Your results can never exceed your self-concept.” This is one of my favorite quotes because it’s the closest thing to the truth. Your results are limited by your view of yourself and by your self-esteem. Never forget your worth.
HU: Anything you want to add?
Reese: The Bison network always has been and always will be real. It’s imperative that we support one another and lift each other up in success. Stay connected with Victor Group, as there’s so much more to come!
