From the President

A letter from the president of Howard University on the spirit of entrepreneurship embedded in the culture of the institution.

by President Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA
Dr. Frederick Hero

Dear Howard University Community,

Howard University entered this year with remarkable momentum rooted in a long and enduring legacy of cultivating leaders, builders, and innovators who shape industries, strengthen communities, and expand opportunity. From our founding, Howard has been a place where talent is nurtured, ambition is refined, and purpose gives direction to enterprise.

Across our campus and throughout the Howard family, entrepreneurship is not an isolated pursuit; it is an extension of our mission. Our students, faculty, and alumni are translating ideas into action — building ventures that respond to real-world challenges and generate lasting impact. Whether in business, technology, healthcare, the arts, public service, or social innovation, Bison entrepreneurs are influencing and driving change across every sector of society.

Throughout this issue, you will see that spirit reflected across our academic disciplines, community, and culture. From student founders transforming classroom learning into viable enterprises to alumni who are scaling businesses and redefining leadership in their fields, Howard’s approach to entrepreneurship is intentional and immersive. It is shaped by the totality of a Howard education — one that combines intellectual rigor, creativity, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to service.

This is what has long distinguished Howard. We do not simply prepare our students to participate in existing systems; we equip them to reimagine and transform them. Our entrepreneurs are grounded in excellence and guided by purpose, with a clear understanding that success is most meaningful when it uplifts others and contributes to the public good.

I invite you to consider how you can help sustain and expand this entrepreneurial ecosystem. Supporting student and alumni ventures, amplifying their work, and patronizing Bison-owned businesses are powerful acts of investment that strengthen our community and extend Howard’s impact far beyond our campus.

When we show up for one another, we reinforce a tradition that has defined Howard for generations: one where ingenuity flourishes, leadership is cultivated, and progress is shared. In doing so, we ensure that Howard University — and the Bison we launch into the world — will continue to lead with purpose and lift up our humanity across generations.
