Senior Jordan Gurley, a business management major from Elmont, New York, is taking her entrepreneurial aspirations to the next level with her nail technician business Mojo By Jo. After noticing the growing price points of manicure and pedicure services, Gurley created Mojo By Jo in 2024 to provide affordable nail services to community members both in her hometown and in Washington, D.C.

“I would constantly go to nail salons and the prices got out of hand, but the quality went down in a sense,” said Gurley. “I wanted to express my creativity through something, and the nail industry seemed like the right place to do it.”

With Mojo By Jo, Gurley uses her creativity to create custom nail designs in a variety of lengths and nail shapes. Gurley’s nail technician services include installing acrylic nails of all lengths and shapes, gel manicures, acrylic overlays, and structured manicures. She noted that as a Howard School of Business student, she’s learned foundational elements of what it takes to start and operate a business.

“Taking electives like New Venture Development and others has helped me create a business plan for my company and stay on the right track,” Gurley shared. “The connections and advice you get by coming to Howard can really benefit you. My Howard network may not be as wide as others, but the connections I have made helped me to get my business to grow by increasing my clientele. They have supported my social media pages for my business and have spread word of mouth for me to gain clients and meet new people.”
