A student once asked me: “What does Howard’s president do?”

I answered her based on the job description I’d read once before. “Serves as chief executive officer of the University,” I replied. “Fundraises, reports to the Board, represents the University…”

Unsatisfied with my rote response, she persisted. “No, really, what does he do?” she asked again.

I’m sure plenty of others have wondered about that, too. So, we decided to show everyone the duties of our new president, Ben Vinson III, specifically on a Monday in November ahead of Thanksgiving. We invited renowned photographer Cheriss May (BA ’94) to shadow him for the day and she arrived with three Leicas around her neck and comfortable sneakers, ready to go.

President Vinson’s communications specialist, Larry J. Sanders (BA ’14), spoke with him and many of his dearest companions; coupled with Cheriss’ images, our goal was to provide an intimate look into the 18th president of Howard University. We hope that, through Larry’s feature and Cheriss’ photography, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the new force at Howard’s helm, steering the University into an incredible future.

Happy reading,
